Raul solo show 12/08/12 New Hope Winery, PA
While Mr Deakin is recovering, check out one of Raul's solo Christmas shows. Last night's was even better than last year's, with just Raul and Nashville session bassist and frequent collaborator Jay Weaver. The spareness thing, along with a comfortable room, worked.
Writer friend Seth Walker opened with a great set featuring jazz and blues guitar licks. Didn't know him before, but highly appreciate him now!
The venue is an intimate room with no blocked sightlines and surprisingly good sound. I'm sorry we've missed several previous visits of Raul's to this nearby space. Hey, and good wine and food, a bonus.
Here's the setlist:
Raul with Jay Weaver on bass
Silent Night
White Christmas
I'll Be Home For Christmas
Marshmallow World
Lucky One
Games That Lovers Play
Haunting Me
Welcome To My World
Mr Lonely
Every Little Thing
Sway
I Said I Love You
Dream River
Here Comes The Rain
joined by Seth Walker
Honeybee / Jingle Bells / Shake, Rattle and Roll
Back In Your Arms Again
Santa Claus Is Back In Town
Blue Christmas
encore, Raul solo on ukulele
Stardust
Blogger apparently doesn't want me to upload videos, so I'll try to put 'em on youtube.

Mavs in Lancaster, PA
First, let me say that American Music Theater is a pretty cushy venue. Nice comfortable seats, good views from most, which compensated for the 90 minute drive. But heck, I would do that to see the Mav Reincarnation in a standing-room-only venue with floors sticky with spilled Coors Light, so...
The crowd had a hefty sprinkling of folks way too old, (in my humble opinion :) ) to have been Mavericks fans so I suspected that the AMT has a group of subscribers who attend many or all of the shows in a season without being rabid fans of any one group. My feeling was confirmed a few minutes later, when the clock ticked past the 7 pm start time (what? Early Bird Specials for music, too?) and a bunch of the oldsters got a little rowdy, with booing and rude shouts about refunds and the like. The Mavs walked onstage in the dark and the booing came again in a new wave. Raul and co. just ignored it, said "Hi!" and launched right into "Born to be Blue". All the rude geezers shut up and listened, at least, and were pretty well behaved from then on.
I was doing a pretty good job of recording short video clips to remind me of the set list so that I could blog it later, when one of the crankiest seniors yelled in my ear that my "camera" (iphone, Pops :) was blocking his view. So much for that. Having been raised well by people about as old as him, I obligingly quit recording. All I can say is that they did a nice mix of new songs from the upcoming Sept. 25 album release, and old Mavs standards. Raul had a two song acoustic interlude with his ukulele, doing "Stardust" and something else I've forgotten, before the band came back to launch into "Guantanamera".
Everyone on stage looked to be having a great time and on many songs there were five or six vocalists taking part. The show went into two encores and wrapped up after two hours, leaving me happy that the Mavs are back, and thinking about how I can manage another show in a few weeks.
See them if you get a chance!

Blog: 10,000 page views and counting
That's pretty cool, folks, thanks for reading and contributing intel.
Have been listening to the EP a lot while on a long business trip and it's bringing back such good memories of the first time around. Looking forward to a lot more music from these guys and a lot of live performances.

If you haven't ordered the EP yet
What are you waiting for? Get busy! Seriously, release date is 5/29 and you can pre-order here:
https://bigmachine.moontoast.com/estore/embed/1038
Still not a lot of tour dates posted on the official website. For example, I don't know why the CMA thing wouldn't be. Pollstar has only that one, June 10 in Nashville at LP Field.

"Stagecoach" show is tonight
The festival is sold out, so it's not like I can help promote it or anything. Here's hoping that it brings a whole new fan base into the Mavs' future. A great article in the LA Times to whet the appetite:

I'm betting that someone in the band will make a pilgrimage to Joshua Tree in memory of Gram Parsons.
Looking forward to a collection of live videos tomorrow on youtube.
New album this fall, and new single soon.
Enjoy!

Guest drummer on "Bottle"
I'll admit that I clicked PLAY on this one to see Mr McFadden back in action but young Mr Dino Malo certainly did a job guesting at the drum kit:

New label, showcase gig
From yesterday's Nashville Tennessean:
"The Mavericks back in studio
"The Mavericks back in studio
Fans of The Mavericks already had plenty of reason to be excited for the band’s reunion and upcoming tour — kicking off with an appearance this April at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, Calif. Now there’s more cause for celebration: new music from the band.
Nashville label Valory Music Co. has signed the reunited Mavericks and will release an album later this year, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of their 1991 debut album. The band — now consisting of original members Raul Malo , Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin along with guitarist Eddie Perez — parted ways in 2003.
Before hitting the road, The Mavericks are set to play a private, invite-only show in Nashville tonight, tying into this week’s annual Country Radio Seminar, which takes place at the Nashville Convention Center Wednesday through Friday.
— Dave Paulson, The Tennessean"

More good news
More good news - Jerry Dale is back too. Rehearsals in Nashville this week. "Bottle" and "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" just wouldn't be the same without him.
